What Is the Difference Between a Tropical Depression and a Tropical Storm?

During the hurricane season, we often hear mentioned tropical depressions and tropical storms.  Have you ever wondered what the difference is between the two?   Well, a tropical depression produces a circular wind flow with maximum sustained winds below 39 mph.   Once those winds exceed 39 mph and/or up to 73 mph that is considered a tropical storm.   Some tropical storms will increase in wind speeds over 73 mph putting them into a new category, Hurricanes!

Although the Madison, Mayodan, Oak Ridge, Summerfield Kernersville, may not see Tropical Storms often, it is always good to be prepared.
