Tips for Protecting Yourself from Hitting a Deer

Tips for Protecting Yourself from Hitting a Deer

Deer populations seem to be on the rise within the Madison, Oak Ridge, Summerfield, Kernersville, and surrounding areas.  We are noticing more and more accidents  being reported involving deer.  So what are we to do about this?  Well, here are a few tips that might help you in case you see a deer.

1.       Dawn & Dusk – Be Aware!   It has been reported that the majority of accidents involving animals happen around dawn and dusk.  When driving during these times, be on the lookout for deer.

2.       Look for Deer Crossing Signs – Many areas that are known to be populated with deer usually have Deer Crossing Signs on the road side.  Pay attention and look for these signs.  If you do see a Deer Crossing Sign, slow down and keep alert.

3.       High Beams – If you can, use your high beams and keep alert.  Your high beams will allow you to more easily spot the deer and give you more time to slow down your approach.

4.       Slow Down – Yes, when traveling at dusk or dawn on roads that are known for deer populations, slow down and be cautious.

5.       Don’t Swerve – Don’t panic and don’t swerve!  Swerving your vehicle could cause you to lose control or you could turn into the path of another vehicle.

6.       Buckle Up – Yes, always make sure you and your passengers have your seatbelts buckled.

If you hit a deer, your comprehensive insurance, which is sometimes referred to as “other than collision”, will be the coverage you will need to repair your vehicle.   Also, remember the deductible on your policy will apply before the insurance covers the additional damages.

Drive safe and be on the lookout for deer!
